PROPOSAL: alt.fan.the-saint
REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
I propose a newsgroup called
<alt.fan.the-saint>
RATIONALE: alt.fan.the-saint
Simon Templar, alias The Saint, a fictional character created by Leslie
Charteris is having a resurgence of popularity. The Saint has had sustained
popularity since the 1920's, and was at the height of fame in the 1960's
when Roger Moore drove around a white Volvo P1800 on the television show.
There was still interest in the 1970's and 1980's as three different Saint
television projects showed.
In the 1990's we are hitting another peak in the long history of The Saint.
There are four upcoming projects that are near publication. There is a new
Paramount film, THE SAINT, starring Val Kilmer which is due on March 14th.
There are two new Saint books coming from Burl Barer: CAPTURE THE SAINT,
and the novelization of the film, THE SAINT. And there is a biography of
Leslie Charteris entitled, A SAINT I AINT, coming from Ian Dickerson.
Some discussion of the Saint has taken place in alt.fan.james-bond, rec.arts.mystery,
rec.arts.movies.past-films, rec.arts.movies.current-films, the Old Time
Radio Digest, The Planet Kilmer mailing list and web site, and the Dorothy
L. Sayers mailing list, but The Saint and his alter ego really need a place
of their own.
An earlier proposal for alt.fan.the-saint was discussed at length on alt.config,
and it was discovered that at that time the alt.fan hierarchy was a mess,
and a new group in that realm would probably not survive nor propegate.
Now that it seems that the alt.fan hierarchy has sorted itself out, it is
time to propose this group once again--this time with a little more force.
As for current Saintly resources on The Internet, besides the newsgroups
and mailing lists mentioned above, the official web site of The Saint Club
is located at http://www.saint.org/,
and Paramount's web site for the Val Kilmer film is up and running at http://www.thesaint.com/.

CHARTER: alt.fan.the-saint
The newsgroup's purpose would be an unmoderated forum to discuss past, current,
and forthcoming Saint projects. It is a place for the fans of The Saint
to congregate and exchange thoughts, views, and exchange ideas. Discussion
of the books by Leslie Charteris, Saint films, Saint television shows, radio
programming, comic books and strips, and anything else related to Simon
Templar alias the Saint, or his creator, Leslie Charteris, would be acceptable.
Related topics such as spys, mysteries, James Bond, other detectives, and
gentlemen thieves such as Raffles will be acceptable. This would not be
a place for discussing religion or other Saints, an issue that crops up
once in a while--I once found Saint books in the Religion section of a local
bookstore.
Want ads and items for sale are permitted, but only if they pertain to The
Saint, Leslie Charteris, mysteries, or other spys or gentleman thieves.
