David Niven as Raffles

Turner Classic Movies is showing Raffles on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at 1:30pm (EST). Raffles is a gentleman thief played by David Niven, and is based on the books by E.W. Hornung (who was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's brother-in-law). If you like The Saint, you'll be sure to enjoy watching David Niven in a very Saint-like role as A.J. Raffles, The Amateur Cracksman.

Avon Comic Books

The Saint was featured in 12 comic books by Avon from 1947 to 1952.

My favorite cover is of the fourth issue of The Saint, from 1948, which features some great artwork by Matt Baker.

The Saint's Squidoo Lenses

Squidoo was started by Seth Godin and allows anyone to create a unique vantage point, called a "lens," of the worldwide web with a certain focus. It is an interesting idea that benefits charities and gives everyone a forum for sharing their view of the world.

The Saint's Volvo This is a lens all about The Saint's Volvo 1800 as seen on the 1960s TV show starring Roger Moore.

Leslie Charteris and The Saint Leslie Charteris was the author of The Saint books. His modern-day Robin Hood was named Simon Templar, whose alias was The Saint. Roger Moore drove around TV in the 1960s in a white Volvo P1800 on the TV series, The Saint.

The Saint's Apple iPhone

In The Saint movie from 1997, starring Val Kilmer, Simon Templar used a Nokia 9000i Communicator. In addition to voice calls, the Nokia 9000 Communicator enabled The Saint to send and receive faxes, e-mail and short messages as well as access Internet services and corporate and public databases. Simon also made good use of the electronic calendar, address book, notepad, and calculator.

It is now 10 years later, and in 2007 it seems that The Saint would use something a bit more like the new Apple iPhone. It is infinitely more powerful, with breakthrough Internet desktop-class email, web browsing, Google maps, and searching. I can only imagine the kind of trouble and adventure that The Saint would find with the power of this device. Perhaps the London Times article that sends him down his next adventure will be read on the Apple iPhone.

Pre-Order The Return of The Saint DVD Set

The Return of The Saint DVD Set from Network is now available for pre-order from Amazon UK for release on January 29, 2007.

This set is eagerly anticipated, and features a number of commentary tracks that were recorded in late 2006 exclusively for this release.

Ian Dickerson of The Saint Club was heavily involved in the creation of this set and getting a great deal of extras on the DVDs. And you can be sure that he did a great job in pulling together a wealth of extras from a good number of different sources. I especially like the PDF files that will be included, as the ones from the Roger Moore series by Network were also of very high quality.

For more information about all the goodies that will be included with this set, here is a nice complete list of all the extras.

Second of January 1929."

The Treasure of Sir Thomas Conway

Burl Barer has written a short story that is exclusively for sale on Amazon.com entitled, The Treasure of Sir Thomas Conway. It is priced at only 49 cents, and well worth the small investment!

This story is a very clever satire written in a Saintly manner by the noted author of a number of books on The Saint. It is a classic caper with a twist at the end, with its roots firmly entrenched in The Falcon, Raffles, The Saint, and the other gentleman thieves. Watch for Burl's classic touches with regards to the title, the main character's name, and others.

Burl Barer Speaks About The Treasure of Sir Thomas Conway:
I've always held affection for the classic gentleman crooks featured in motion pictures produced in the 1930's and 1940s by RKO. I also favor the once-popular literary form known as the novelette. In “The Treasure of Sir Thomas Conway,” our hero's name, Falcon Arcaio, sets the satirical tone for this modern day reworking of an old fashioned recipe for adventure.

Latest Web Statistics for www.saint.org

The saint.org website devoted to Leslie Charteris, Simon Templar, and The Saint has been up and running for just about 4100 days (more than 10 years), and the log file contains close to 20.4 million entries! Using Analog 6.0 for Macintosh, I have compiled and posted a complete statistical usage report for www.saint.org from October 18, 1995 through December 31, 2006.

There are annual statistical reports for 2006, 2005, 2004, and 1997.

I have also posted a shorter versions of just the statistics for the months of December 2006, November 2006, October 2006, September 2006, and August 2006 to see what the near-term trends look like.

Happy New Year 2007

Happy New Year 2007 to all the Saint fans out there in the world. It's shaping up to be a good year for The Saint, and we have a lot of good things to look forward to. The forthcoming release of the new DVD box set of The Return of The Saint is going to be especially good.

The buzz and rumors on the new Saint TV show from Geoffrey Moore are starting to get louder, and if that becomes a reality then there will certainly be a lot more to talk about in the coming months!

We're also keeping a sharp eye on Ian Dickerson's biography of Leslie Charteris, entitled, "A Saint I Aint!"
